Andrew Simpson
In-house Counsel, American Express
Andrew Simpson is in-house Counsel at American Express. Andy focuses on supporting American Express’s European insurance business but is increasingly assisting with the development of new digital initiatives. Recent projects include establishing a new insurance business for American Express in Poland and launching a partnership between American Express and Xbox (which allows Xbox users to sync their American Express cards with their Xbox Live account to take advantage of offers and rewards).
Andy started his legal career with Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) in London. Andy experienced a great breadth of work during his two-year training contract with BLP. His work ranged from an M&A transaction for a leading lifestyle clothing business in the UK to defending against a prosecution for an environmental oil spill in Wales. Andy remained with BLP upon qualifying as a solicitor in 2006 and joined BLP’s insurance and reinsurance group. This work excited Andy because of the range of subject matters that the insurance coverage related to: the World Trade Center attacks, Hurricane Katrina, the secondary US life insurance market and an aborted expedition to the North Pole.
Andy obtained an undergraduate degree in law at the University of Exeter and completed his legal practice course at the College of Law in York. While at University, Andy became captain of the university volleyball club and probably still holds the record as the shortest person ever to play volleyball for the university!
