James Peters
Vice President of Legal, LegalZoom.com Attorney Services division
James Peters is the Vice President of Legal for LegalZoom.com’s Attorney Services division. James is responsible for directing product and service development strategies and managing regulatory and compliance issues related to offering attorney services online. His primary interest area is in assessing new ways of providing legal services based on shifting regulatory landscapes and consumer preferences.
James’s expertise is in presenting legal products/services to consumers on behalf of a corporation that is not a law firm. He ensures that basic regulatory requirements are met regarding LegalZoom’s attorney provided services. This requires broad awareness around issues such as attorney advertising, multi-jurisdictional practice and virtual practice as well as deeper knowledge in areas such as limited scope legal services, unauthorized practice of law and prepaid legal service regulations. His other primary area of expertise is in understanding the competitive landscape for online legal services for families and small businesses, whether those services come from law firms, legal document companies, prepaid legal plans or any other method of delivery.
Prior to joining LegalZoom in 2003, James worked at Colorado Lawyers for the Arts and at the Colorado Lawyers Committee.
James received a B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and an M.B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he completed an independent study course built on a strategy based assessment of the evolving legal services industry. James is a member of the State Bar of California and is qualified for entry onto the Roll of Solicitors in England and Wales.
