KickOff: 19-20 January 2013 in Segovia, Spain

In order to cultivate working relationships among all participants, LawWithoutWalls™ kicks off overseas at I.E. on 19 and 20 January, 2013. We will actively participate in interactive exercises that develop individual awareness, build team camaraderie, and hone communication, teaming, idea generation, and entrepreneurial skills.

Students will participate and interact with thought leaders and lawyer entrepreneurs from around the world. Together the LawWithoutWalls community will engage in lively discussions about current problems facing the legal profession in countries around the world and how innovation and change can occur.

LawWithoutWalls is, among other things, an attempt to eliminate the barriers between faculty and students, business and law, professors and practitioners, education and practice.  Thus, the KickOff is anything but a typical conference.  Instead, it is a collaborative, skills-intensive working session designed to challenge the way we think, the way we learn, and the way we communicate with each other.  In keeping with the spirit of LawWithoutWalls, we will try new things, take on risks, and hopefully learn a great deal about ourselves, each other, and what we want for the future.

The goals of the KickOff are to:

  • Make real connections with new colleagues and begin getting to know each other
    • Learn each other's styles
    • Get comfortable with partners and teams
    • Enable "the technology to disappear"
  • Provide skills training in key areas:
    • Team building
    • Idea generation
    • Interview and investigation methods
  • Learn about the current and future state of legal education and practice in the US and UK
  • Gain exposure to entrepreneurship in US and UK

ConPosium: 13-14 April 2013 in Miami, Florida, US

On 13-14 April 2013, Miami Law will host the second part-virtual, part-live ConPosium that will combine traditional conference-style panels with virtual, real-time, interactive participation.

Like last year, the ConPosium will be an extremely interactive event with live chat, music, judges, and audience participation clickers (think American Idol meets Dragon's Den). Students from the thirteen LawWithoutWalls teams will present their Projects of Worth — solutions to problems in law practice or legal education across a broad spectrum of topics. Each team will also have one member of their team help set the stage and provide background and commentary on the topic/industry.  Each Project of Worth will be assessed by a panel made up of an entrepreneur, venture capitalist, lawyer, and academic. These "judges" will critique the projects based on substance, creativity, viability, and presentation style.  And the audience will be able to vote in their opinion as well.
