LawWithoutWalls is all about collaboration and innovation. The 150+ people currently participating in LawWithoutWalls are doing so because they believe that legal education and practice should embrace the challenges posed by the globalization of our world, the development of new technologies, the introduction of new legal service providers, the necessity for increased access to justice, the transdiciplinary nature of clients’ needs, and the disappearing distinction between business and law.

LawWithoutWalls celebrated its inaugural year in 2011.  It took place over one semester and included six law schools from within the United States and outside the country: Fordham Law, Harvard Law, Miami Law, New York Law School, Peking University School of Transnational Law, and University College London Faculty of Laws.  We had twenty-three students, eleven Academic Mentors, eleven Practitioner Mentors, four entrepreneurs, fourteen subject experts and three researchers all working together to identify problems in legal practice or education and create real solutions.

In 2012, IE Business School, Indiana University Mauer School of Law, Stanford Law School, Universidad de Los Andes Facultad de Derecho, University of St. Gallen Law School, and Sydney Law School joined the LawWithoutWalls community.  We grew from 23 students to 36 students and had 13 teams made up of 2-3 students each, academic and practitioner mentors, entrepreneurs, and subject experts.

In 2013, we welcome IE Law, Montréal Law, National Law School of India University, São Paulo Laws, Tel Aviv University, Universidad Católica de Chile Law, and Wharton School of Business.

We seek students with a creative and entrepreneurial spirit, the maturity to embrace the challenges of collaboration and cross-cultural teamwork, and the willingness to boldly engage in the public sharing and community brainstorming required by this innovative venture. If you are a student and would like to apply, check out our on-line application.  Students will be selected through a centralized application process based on a personal statement addressing why they want to participate, a virtual interview, previous work experience, and demonstrated leadership ability.
