Tony Brown is an Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney's Office for the Central District of California. Tony has prosecuted a wide variety of federal offenses, including mail and wire fraud, drug trafficking crimes, bank robberies, child pornography crimes, and identity theft.
Before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, Tony was in private practice, at Greines Martin Stein & Richland in Los Angeles. There he was actively involved in pro bono matters, which have included assisting in the defense of a United States Marine being court-martialed for the kidnapping and murder of an Iraqi civilian; helping draft an amicus brief supporting two United States nationals in the custody of the Multi-National Force–Iraq who had challenged the denial of their habeas petitions to the United States Supreme Court; and successfully suing a local redevelopment agency for its long-standing failure to develop sufficient affordable housing.
Following law school, Tony clerked for the Honorable James R. Browning of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He then joined the litigation department of the Los Angeles law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, where his practice included environmental, white collar criminal, and appellate matters. Tony joined GMSR to pursue his longstanding interest in appellate law. He has assisted in appeals, writs, and amicus briefs in the United States Supreme Court as well as the California Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal. Before becoming a lawyer, Tony developed his writing and oral advocacy skills by earning a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of California, Berkeley, and then teaching expository writing at Harvard University.
Tony received his J.D. in 2005 from Boalt Hall School of Law, where he was an editor of Ecology Law Quarterly (ELQ) and a finalist in the National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition. Tony also earned a Ph.D. in English from UC-Berkeley in 2005. In his spare time, Tony likes to surf, cook, and hang out with his wife and two sons.
